As I was in the process of writing this, I had an example of what NOT to do. One of my FB friends posted a quote (probably from one of those sites where you can get famous or celebrity ‘Quotes’ to use) and I’m sure he thought it was funny, but it had a shock element to it and there was immediate backlash. The first comment stated how offensive they thought it was and how could that person post something like that and be a coach. But, someone else posted that they thought it was really funny. Then there came a flurry of comments.

Can you afford to offend some of your following? Be careful when you are posting quotes and make sure that the content is a good representation of the brand image you want to portray. Remember, once it’s out and you’ve shared it with the world, you can’t get it back to change it or delete it. It’s now a part of online history – your history and your brand.

What happens when it goes viral? Viral marketing can be a blessing or a curse depending on what it is that goes viral for you. The blessing of viral is when something you’ve put together positions you as an expert, putting you in a positive light and millions are seeing the message. The viral curse is when something that you don’t want shared shows you or your company (your brand) in a bad light and it goes viral. Now millions of people see it and have a bad opinion of you.

Customer service departments need to be especially aware of the ‘viral curse’, since unresolved issues can easily become fodder for a social media viral event. My favorite example is the United Airlines song (do a search for it on YouTube – it’s priceless).

Think ‘backyard barbeque’ when approaching your online audience on the social networks, forums or membership sites. You wouldn’t walk up to someone at a BBQ and start pitching them immediately about your products or services. People don’t like it, offline or online, so put yourself in their shoes when developing your social media messaging strategy.

And yes, there will always be someone that is obnoxious or annoying and will try to blast out their ads all over the social networks, but sooner or later they’ll get de-friended, hidden, un-followed or deleted.

You are Your Brand!

As a social media marketing specialist and coach I am always being asked, “How do you deal with social media in regard to the personal and business aspects of posts and profiles?”

You can never remove YOU from the social media equation. You are your brand. What happens when you try to mix a business profile into an already existing personal profile, when the personal profile has things in it that you don’t want shared with the business community of clients and prospects, or even an employer and co-workers? Do you really want those posts and pictures of you in compromising situations on display for your clients, prospects, vendors, business associates, bosses or co-workers?

Who ever thought that those social networks, where you hung out with your friends and let your hair down, would become the new business communication tools of choice? And who ever thought that all of those conversations and pictures would be accessible through the search engines?

Social media has changed the way the world communicates and it is evolving so rapidly that who knows what the next generation of social media tools will look like. With all the information we have at our fingertips, the way we do business has changed as well.

I always recommend that you put together a laser-focused strategy for your social media, just like the one you have for your offline marketing efforts. With a strategy that is focused on your target market you will have a clear direction on what tools to use and what information to put out there in order to be viewed as a valuable resource in your niche or industry. Your posts, tweets and status updates need to have some thought put into the messaging before you hit the Share button. You want to think about your target audience and how they might react to what you put out there.

You are Your Brand, so treat your online experience and exposure with the utmost care.

We are reminded every day of the value of social media in our Global Communications, but especially during times of disasters. During the recent Earthquake in Chile, Twitter and Facebook were critical communication links to the rest of the world. In sending messages to loved ones and posting pictures and videos, that the media was able to then upload to television, it was very evident that social media is now more immediate and mainstream than traditional media.

When people ask me if social media is a fad, one only has to look at these natural disasters and see that social media is now the way the world communicates. I’m happy to be a part of the social media evolution in offering coaching solutions. Check out my interview on The Nancy Laine Show at- www.youtube.com/coachingsocialmedia

Week 5 was the Bonus week for the Hub Socializer Coaching Series that covered Self-Empowerment and Energy. We discussed how everything is energy and what we speak, write, think and do sends out an energy signal. This includes online and offline communication.

Our thoughts and emotions create our reality and I shared more detail about it with the 8 Secrets from my book, Reality TV & You. I talked about some of the various energy therapy modalities that I’ve been trained on, including EFT, Matrix Energetics, Quantum Entrainment, Qigong, The Sedona Method, The Flower of Life and Radial Forgiveness.

I shared my personal success stories in working with EFT (Emotional Freedom Technique) and then I led the group in a live EFT session on releasing subconscious limiting beliefs and choosing self-empowering thoughts.

It’s been a great 5 week coaching series and it’s now available as a Home Study Course on the web at: www.HubSocializer.com – please check it out.

I was recently asked for my opinion about the differences between membership sites and micro continuity sites and which would I recommend.

I’ve been noticing a trend over the last 12-18 months where there was a shift in some membership sites to social networking sites. I’ve also been noticing that there is a lot of attrition with membership sites. Micro continuity is becoming extremely popular because the continuity is for a shorter time period, i.e. 16 – 26 weeks. When there is a clear ending in site, people have a tendency to stay involved, whereas when it’s going to last forever, people may bail out of the program.

However, there is a purpose for both types of programs, so it’s important to determine your business model to see which is the right one for you. Internet Markeing and Social Media is not a one-size fits all type of marketing media, it always goes back to your business strategies as to which is the right solution for you.

I also encourage my clients to consider starting their own social networking site so that they are building a community that consists of their target audience. As it grows, you learn what problems your target audience is facing, what their needs, wants and desires are through posts in the forums. It is your captive audience.

You can set up your own free social networking site at www.ning.com , but there are limitations with the free solution. I have two other social networking platforms I work with; Social Networking Empire – www.budurl.com/SNEgo (a hosted solution – I have www.iWomanLife.com on this platform) and Niche Socializer (a software download solution – this one is not finalized yet, since there is a lot of flexibility in the software and it takes more thought and effort in setting it up).

To Your Success!
